1. Ripping the DVD

There are currently 2 major tools for ripping DVDs. SmartRipper, which was the previous choice for DVD ripping, provides a very simple and easy to use interface, however has been known to fail on a number of recent DVDs. A page describing using SmartRipper can be found in the Appendix. The current choice is DVD Decryptor, which to date has not failed on any of the DVDs which SmartRipper fails on.

Note: the ripping method explained here is the most common way and usualy works but sometimes the chapters and title streams are mixed up. If you aren't certain which vobs/chapters you need to rip it's best to open them directly in windvd or another program that can open vobfiles directly and see which chapters to rip.

  1. First setup Chapter Ripping information
  2. Goto Tools --> Settings
  3. Select IFO Mode
  4. Check "Chapter Information - OGG"
  1. Ensure you are in IFO Mode by Selecting Mode --> IFO (I)
  2. Select the first VTS which is the appropriate length for your episode.
  3. If unsure which title, open in a DVD player and identify the title of the first episode
  4. Select the stream processing tab.
  1. Select "Enable Stream Processing"
  2. Select each audio stream, and set them to Demux.
  3. Select a good place to save the files like "c:\series\episode#"
  4. Make sure you've got enough space.
  5. Finally press the DVD -> Harddrive button.
Note: For DVDs where the episodes are contained in one large VTS use the proceedure below.
  1. First Identify using a software DVD player how many chapters are in each episode.
  2. Select the large VTS.
  3. Most single title DVDs use 5 or 6 chapters / episode. If you are ripping the first episode, select only the first (X) number of chapters required for the episode. Keep track of where each episode ends.
  4. Once selected, follow the same stream processing sequence as above.
  5. Click the DVD -> HardDrive button when ready.
  6. Repeat, deselecting the previous set of chapters, and selecting the next set for each individual episode.
Note: Depending how fast your dvdrom is, this can take some time. Around 15 min for a whole dvd.
-Close DVD Decryptor once its done
Warning: If you got any file named *.m2v you didn't follow the instructions. Delete and then start over.
-Proceed to the next step.
